Enugu State government officials were reportedly attacked by some Hausa cattle traders on Thursday, April 22
The cattle traders tried to get rid of the officials and police officers when an attempt was made to demolish the New Artisan Market.
The state commissioner of police, Mohammed Aliyu, has confirmed the incident.
There was pandemonium in Enugu state on Thursday evening, April 22, as Hausa cattle traders at the New Artisan Market attacked government officials and policemen.
The Punch reports that trouble began when state government officials went to demolish the market following an order of the state High Court.
It was gathered that the court declared the market a security threat because of its proximity to the Government House.
Unfortunately, the execution was challenged by the traders, who brought out several AK-47 rifles from the market and chased away the officials and security operatives.
Also, Sampson Okorie, an eyewitness noted that the gun-wielding Hausa traders seized two bulldozers the state government deployed to the market and destroyed a police vehicle The vehicle, according to him, was abandoned by the police, who ran for their lives when they could not escape with it.
We gather that the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu has confirmed the attack on the officials. Aliyu, however, described the action of the traders as unfortunate, adding that they had agreed to move out of the market after a meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Fulani herdsmen continue to destroy farmlands across the southwest region, some of the herders are now under arrest alongside some of their cows. The arrests were made by the Ondo state Security Network Agency, Amotekun.
The security outfit seized about 250 cows and arrested two herders. They were accused of destroying 300-hectare farmland in the Ipogun, Ilara Mokin, and Owena Dan areas of the Ifedore local government area of the state.
